The U. S. is the first to approve a generic version of a drug that treats acid reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn. A generic version of Nexium is expected to make up $1.8 billion in U. sales by the end of 2015. It will be available through Novo Nordisk’s subsidiary, Hoechst Marion Roussel, France, on Novartis’ website.
The drug will be sold as an oral tablet, but its manufacturer will sell one as an extended-release capsule and two as a capsule that is taken in the morning. The pills will be sold in the U. and Canada. Novo Nordisk says its market shares for Nexium, which is being sold under its own brand, have not been verified.
Novo Nordisk is expected to make another major move this year to get the drug to market without facing patent expirations. The company’s U. patent on Nexium, which was set to expire in 2015, expires in 2020 and the patent for AstraZeneca’s drug, esomeprazole magnesium, expires in March of 2021.
“Esomeprazole is a medication used to treat gastric or duodenal ulcers and other ulcers,” says Dr. Mark D. Johnson, vice president of marketing and general counsel for Novo Nordisk. “It can be used to treat the symptoms of acid reflux or GERD, and it can also be used to treat heartburn or acid indigestion.”
Novo Nordisk’s patent on Nexium, which was set to expire in 2012, will also expire in the U. in the next two years. AstraZeneca will be given its first generic launch in 2016, when the drug will be made available as a chewable pill. The company is also expected to launch a generic version of Nexium in 2017. Novo Nordisk says it will start selling the drug in the U. The drug is expected to be sold to both pharmacies and the consumer.
The company is working on a new drug to combat a growing number of chronic conditions, including heartburn. The company’s latest product, Pepcid, is designed to address a common condition in which stomach acid causes inflammation and ulcers. The new product, a generic version of Nexium, has already been approved and is expected to hit the U. market by July 15.

The study also found that the incidence of acid reflux in people taking Nexium was lower than the risk of stomach ulcers. The study was conducted in six European countries, including Germany and France, and included more than 100,000 patients.
James K. Davis, the lead investigator in the study, told Reuters Health that the findings of the study were based on a more than two-thirds of patients taking the drug and their physicians. “It’s a very difficult thing to conduct a study,” he said. “We don’t know how many people get ulcers from it.”
Novo Nordisk, which is based in Merthoff, Oklahoma, said in a statement that its Nexium marketing plan has “very few restrictions” on marketing in the U. and Canadian markets, making the drug a non-GAAP product. “We will continue to market this drug in the U. and Canada,” Novo Nordisk said.
The company will continue to market the drug in Europe, with a target market size of about $1.1 billion, according to the company’s website.
Food and Drug Administration approved the drug for reflux in 2004. In 2006, the FDA expanded the drug to prevent heartburn.
